Self-Help Stammering Therapy Products

It is believed that as much as one in every hundred adults in the UK have a stammer or stutter. I would guess that the majority of these people have attempted to overcome the speech impediment at some stage of their life. This is what they may have found:

Traditional speech therapy

Speech therapy is where the majority of people who stutter will start when trying to improve their speech. I myself, attended speech therapy from the age of five, I continued attending until the age of eighteen. Thirteen years and I still had the stutter, that was successful!

The advice I had been given at speech therapy was basically:

speak slowly

take a deep breath before you speak

accept your stutter

I am sorry but that advice is just not good enough.

Group stuttering speech courses

There are now a number of private speech courses that offer stuttering/stammering help and are run on a group basis. In my opinion these are of more value than traditional speech therapy as at least the aim of the course is to eradicate the stutter. Speech therapy is more of controlling and accepting the stutter.

One to one speech courses

There are also one to one speech courses available. I personally believe that this is the best form of stuttering therapy as each person will have their own individual stutter and needs.

Stuttering self help dvd and ebook

For people who would prefer a self help form of stuttering therapy, there are now stuttering dvds and ebooks available. Whichever form of stuttering treatment you choose it is essential that you work hard to practice the techniques.

With regards to the practice it is without doubt that the more the merrier is the way to go. There is a speech centre in the UK which is called The How To Stop Stuttering Centre and this is some where that people can obtain a set of stuttering cure techniques that work.

My Goal Of Stopping Stuttering

I developed a stutter or as some people call it a stammer in childhood. From what my parents tell me it started when I was four years of age.

Despite regular speech therapy over the next fourteen years my stutter became worse. I remember quite clearly the fear of having to read out from a book in class. On entering the classroom I would notice that there was a reading book on each and every desk. My mind would begin to stress and would think that the tutor would ask me to read from the book. Just waiting my turn, knowing that it would result in yet another one of those stuttering moments would be torture.

Socialising with friends was not exactly easy for me either. I am fairly sure that the majority of people enjoy going out with their friends and even look forward to the prospect. I was some what different - I would dread it.

My worst area of speech was using the telephone. To say that the telephone was something I would avoid using would have been something of an understatement - luckily my father made the majority of the calls on my behalf. Some people may say that this was not exactly helping me in the long run. This may be correct and I was very grateful at the time.

After leaving school, I started to attend interviews to try to find employment including a very bad one at a business cost cutting company. I would normally stutter more when under pressure or when meeting new people and both of these situations are prevalent in an interview situation. I would normally arrive at the interview very tired after a lack of sleep through the stress of it all and I have to say found it very difficult to convince any employer to take me on.

As you can no doubt imagine I was eager to find a way of stopping stuttering and I did eventually attain fluency after purchasing a seventy minute self-help stuttering therapy DVD from the UK. I now live happy and successful life and as a career I now I work for a DVD authoring company.

This was my history of having a stutter and as you can see it was to have a happy ending - stuttering can be overcome with hard work and dedication.

Why Do I Have This Horrible Stutter?

I once had a neighbour who was about sixty-five. I could not believe the way she lived life - she would rarely smile or say anything positive. Her name was Nancy.

When I first moved to this particular area, I tried to make friends with the people who lived close to me, this was fairly easy as I sold Tesco Voucher Codes as well as offering a DVD duplication service for a living which was a kind of excuse for talking to them. When I first met Nancy she kept saying how ill she felt and about how her back was playing her up. I went away from this meeting feeling quite sorry for Nancy.

About a month later I met Nancy again. I asked her in a very positive and upbeat way, how she was. I wish I had not bothered as I then had to listen to all of her problems. She did not have one happy thing to say. Over the next few years of living by Nancy, I actually went out of my way to avoid her.

I have to admit that I also used to feel sorry for myself. I grew up with a speech impediment known as a stutter. I could never quite comprehend as to why I developed this speech impediment. It did not seem fair to me as I believed I was a really nice person.

I lived with the stuttering problem until the age of twenty-two and then began to have a change of attitude. Instead of looking at people who I thought were more fortunate than myself, I started to read and hear about people who were far less fortunate.

If I am asked by a particular person as to how I am I will now almost always reply in a positive manner - that is even if I am feeling really bad. I try and walk around with a smile on my face and am now living life to the full. I have also managed to overcome that horrible speech impediment and to therefore learn the ways to eradicate stuttering.

People like Nancy could do with having the same change in attitude and they may find they have more visitors to their house and that some of their ailments disappear.

Alternative Therapies For Stuttering And Stammering

OK, so despite your best efforts, via attending speech therapy, you have not been able to achieve fluency. So what are your options now? Where now should or could you turn to continue your attempts to stop stuttering?

Well before I start to write about some potential answers to the above questions I should really introduce myself. I am Steve Hill, a speech coach from England. I am not a speech therapist and nor do I want to be one. I offer an alternative therapy for stuttering and one that works.

I developed a speech impediment, a stutter, when I was a young boy. I attended speech and language therapy via my local hospital. Even though it was of use it never offered me the opportunity to eradicate the stutter.

The majority of the speech and language therapists were nice enough people and certainly tried their best to help me; it was just that the training that they had been provided with was less than adequate.

I was particularly frustrated at one particular speech and language therapy session; it was with a therapist who I did not really get on with; he was rather aggressive and very impatient. He told me that there was not a cure for stammering/stuttering. I replied:

“Fair enough. So what are you or the profession of speech and language therapy doing to find a cure?”

Speech therapist:

“Ermm, well nothing”

Me

“OK, that’s all very positive! NOT!”

For me the above example summed up my experience of speech therapy; I can only hope that the service has improved since my day!

I was eventually able to realise my dream of overcoming my stutter when I was aged 22 and as a career I now help other people to achieve fluency.

As stated earlier I offer the alternative therapy for stammering and stuttering.

I have a website at http://www.stutter-cure.com which has information about the types of therapy that I offer.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me.
